ISRAEL VOTES TODAY IN PRIME MINISTERIAL ELECTIONS IN WHICH ALL CANDIDATES ARE HARDLINERS ON ISRAELI/PALESTINIAN RELATIONSHIPS

The quoted highlights and commentary demonstrate my own perspectives and might not be reflective of the slant of the article they relate to
INDEPENDENT [ENGLAND]

1. A Divided  Nation Argues as Israel Prepares  to Vote

[Has a picture that shows the beauty of Kadia candidate Tzipio Livni,a physical fairness that conceals the skull of the bloodthirsty radical militarism that led to the deaths of 1,300 Palestinians, many of them children in an operation in which 13 Israelis died in 3 weeks of unchallenged Israeli aerial, naval and missile supremacy as they bombarded Gaza, claimg that they wanted to stop missile attacks into Idsrael while their opponent Hamas claims those missiles were protesting continuous Israeli blockade of Gaza that led its inhabitants to communicate with the outside world through dangerous tunnels which thereby became an industry]

[This article identifies Livni with an olive branch in contrast to the more militarist Likud candidate Netahyahu and the particularly uncompromising Lieberman of the Yisrael Beiteinu party because in an arena of militaristic radicals, the radical who modifies their radicalism is seen as holding out an olive branch]

2.TIME [US]

HIGHLIGHT:

"Israeli voters are also worried that Netanyahu — and his objections to a proposed Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza — may clash with the Obama Administration. Otherwise, the ex-premier, with his flawless American accent (he went to M.I.T.) and mannerisms, is media-ready for the U.S. Netanyahu says he will refuse to stop expanding Jewish settlements in the West Bank and to share Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state. Both are seen as key to an accord with the Palestinians. Netanyahu also says Israel will stop Iran from building nuclear weapons, by force if necessary, while the White House is making more conciliatory noises towards Tehran lately.

The Israeli press has often repeated a quote from ex-President Bill Clinton, that Netanyahu "thinks he's the superpower and we are here to do whatever he requires." Few Israelis want to their new premier to jeopardize their country's special relationship with Washington. The more moderate Livni and Barak are seen as less likely to rile the Obama Administration.

One fourth of Israel's 5.2 million voters are still undecided, but if Tuesday's results mirror the earlier polls, Netanyahu is likely to lead a rightwing coalition cobbled together with Lieberman's party, along with the ultra-religious and nationalist parties, all of which oppose giving up land to the Palestinians for a future state, a solution pushed by the U.S. and the international community."

3.2002 Netanyahu-Sharon elections shows how a similar drama is being replayed in 2009

HIGHLIGHT:

"In a series of conversations with TIME this month, Netanyahu has for the first time unveiled details of his strategy for ending the conflict with the Palestinians. His plan would make Sharon's military operations in Ramallah and Gaza last week look like training exercises. Netanyahu insists that Arafat and the Palestinians have not accepted Israel's right to exist, despite the 1993 peace accord signed by Arafat and Rabin that was supposed to lead to a negotiated end to the conflict. Arafat, he points out, still talks about Palestinian refugees' "right of return" to family homes inside what is now Israel. Israelis believe that such immigration would mean the end of their nation as a Jewish state. "As long as the right of return is on the books, that means there's no real acceptance of Israel," Netanyahu says."

"If Palestinian leaders emerge who are ready to give up on the right of return, says Netanyahu, he would be ready to sign a full peace agreement."

4.Very percipient article from December 2009,before the Israeli offensive, that weights the motivations of the various actors in the deadly drama.Makes for fascinating comparison with the present reality of Februrary 2009.

HIGHLIGHT:

"...Israel's leaders [could be ] be compelled to launch a more robust military response. That, of course, may be what President Abbas — and others in the Arab world hostile to Hamas — are counting on, as the only plausible scenario for restoring Fatah's control over Gaza".

HARRAETZ [CENTRIST ISRAELI NETWORK]

5. On AIPAC, the central Israeli lobby in the US

HIGHLIGHT:

"Personally, I do not share the underlying philosophy of AIPAC, in particular its unreflective support of hard-line, right wing policies in Israel. But this organization is merely playing by the rules governing the American political system."

6.ALMOST FUNNY;OMINOUS
Senior U.K. diplomat said arrested over anti-Semitic tirade

"A senior diplomat in the British Foreign Office has been arrested for inciting religious hatred after he launched into an anti-Semitic tirade at a London gym, the Daily Mail reported on Monday.

Witnesses told the British newspaper they heard diplomat Rowan Laxton shouting "f**king Israelis, f**king Jews" while watching a TV report of Israel Defense Forces operations in Gaza from the seat of an exercise bike.

He also reportedly shouted that IDF soldiers should be "wiped off the face of the Earth."

The Daily Mail said Laxton continuedthe tirade even after he was approached by other gym users.

READERS COMMENT:
itle: anger at IDF slaughter
Name: naomi
City:
State:

If he said that about Jews, then that is wrong and hard to forgive. There is a big distinction between Israel and Jews (although the Isreali government would love to combine the two and accuse anyone accusing it of war crimes as "anti-semitic" ). Most people criticising Israel for killing children and other atrocities know this distinction.
On the other hand, the anger felt by many watching Israel`s pre-election war games amid a trapped population is widespread. The real problem for Israel is not some heated words by a tactless individual but how the world see it now.

7. Jerusalem in photographic art:the work of Israeli artist Yoram Amir

Perhaps the most contested space in the world:Palestinians want East Jerusalem as their capital;that notion is anathema to a significant number of powerful Israelis, even though Israel annexed the city in the 1967 war. Before then it was not part of Israel according to the 1948 UN initiative that founded Israel .

QUOTE
The Israeli offensive into Gaza now looks likely to
short-circuit any plans Obama might have had to press
Israel into withdrawing to its pre-1967 borders and
sharing Jerusalem.

Israel's successes in having Western media portray the
Gaza offensive as an 'anti-terrorist operation' will
also diminish hopes of peace talks any time soon.

Obama inherits this mess in a few weeks. During the
elections, Obama bowed to the Israel lobby, offering a
new US carte blanche to Israel and even accepting
Israel's permanent monopoly of all of Jerusalem.

As he concludes forming his cabinet, his Middle East
team looks like it may be top-heavy with friends of
Israel's Labour party.

Obama keeps saying he must remain silent on policy
issues until George Bush, the outgoing US president,
leaves office, but his staff appear happy to avoid
having to make statements about Gaza that would
antagonise Israel's American supporters.

Israel's Gaza offensive is also likely to torpedo the
current Saudi-sponsored peace plan, which had been
backed by all members of the Arab League.

The plan, now likely defunct, had called for Israel to
withdraw to its 1967 borders and share Jerusalem in
exchange for full recognition and normalised relations
with the Muslim world.

THE TIDE OF WAR TURNS:16TH DAY OF ASSYMETRIC WAFARE BETWEEN HAMAS AND ISRAEL.MORE THAN 800 PALESTINIANS DEAD;LESS THAN 20 ISRAELI FATALITIES:WHO WILL REIN IN THE DOGS OF WAR?

SKY NEWS [US]

1. Hamas Defiant As Gaza Pounded
http://uk.news. yahoo.com/ 5/20090111/ twl-hamas- defiant-as- gaza-pounded- 3fd0ae9.html

REUTERS

2.Israel and Hamas vow to fight on in Gaza

http://uk.news. yahoo.com/ 22/20090111/ tpl-uk-palestini ans-israel- c3c492c.html

I would like to know how Hamas is survivng this
onslaught. They have been bombed continuously for 16
day by air,sea and land. They have no aircraft with
which to intercept Israeli planes. They have no
anti-aircraft weapons.They have no radar.As far as I
know there has been no Israeli aircraft casualty. The
Palestinians have been bombarded from the sea. They
have no sea power. They do not have weapons that can
reach the Israeli ships. They have been shelled by
artillery. They have no artillery to respond with. They
have been shelled by tanks.I understand they have
ant-tank weapons and mortars, rockets and rocket
launchers and I expect,machine guns.

Someone has written that they have used their forces
selectively and conservatively. It also appears that
they might not have been taken as much by surprise as
some commentators had thought.

As it is,their,in my view, largely symbolic firing of
rockets into Israel has not stopped. The Israeli side
is facing a a critical challenge here.Their recent
warning that violence will escalate suggests
that, after two weeks ,they might be moving into phase
three of a struggle that began with massive
bombardment from the air,the land and the sea.The
second phase was committing ground troops, armoured
units and perhaps infantry,on foot.A third phase might
be to engage even more directly with their opponents
by the rugged urban fighting that some commentators
claim is the only way to complete the job of breaking
the will of Hamas or ending its fighting capability
and rendering it politically irrelevant .It would
seem that the unstated Israeli aim is to achieve this
so as to reshape the character of any future political
manoeuvres, making sure that a fait accompli is in
place before the new US President is sworn in.That
President Elect, anyway, has declared the usual US
determination to isolate Hamas,a resolve mentioned
again in the last week,in spite of his claim to desist
from speaking on the conflict because he has not
assumed office yet.It would seem that the rumours
that he wants to talk to Hamas forced his hand to
declare publicly against the possibility of such
sacrilege.

As it is,it would seem that the situation,to my view
and my hope,is fast rendering the US role in the
conflict of increasingly less relevance.A biased
arbitrator is worse than useless,he is dangerous. The
US continues to insist that it will not recognise or
even talk to Hamas until it recognises Israel's right
to exist, renounces terrorism and abides by all
previous peace agreements.Absolute bullshit,in my
view.
Israel is a geographical and racial anomaly that needs
to be rethought. Its presence can only be guaranteed by
accommodation and agreement with its Arab neighbours
not by force as has been the perspective that seems to
have been most relevant in its founding and
persistence. It is also fitting to ask,as someone has
suggested, what Israel should be recognised, since its
borders have unilaterally expanded since they were
drawn and imposed by the partition of Palestine and
subsequent founding of the state in 1948.My knowledge
of these issues is basic but I think and hope I am
not going too far beyond my competence to judge.

As for not using terror,I am opposed to suicide
bombing,a ,method used by Hamas in the past.It
devalues human life,to me.I understand the logic of
desperation and martyrdom that might fuel it but do
not identify with it,including its use in resisting an
occupier,as Israel is.But my opponent cannot be
armed, and continually rearmed and by you,the US and
you insist I should neither arm nor fight.Because any
action by Hamas, since its govt is unrecognised in
spite of its adherence to the holy grail of democracy
which was Bush's major and much abused ideological
tool, any combative actions by Hamas represent
terrorism.Of course,we must bot speak of similar
tactics used by the Zionist founders of ISRAEL in
their struggle for a state,Menachem Begin and the
Irgun,Yitzhak Shamir and the Stern Gang.

As for recognising past agreements, the justice of
those agreements is thrown in doubt by Jewish
observers and participants in the so called peace
process,by Americans and by Palestinians. I think the
whole thing should start afresh without US who has not
always been a non-partisan broker.

As it is,Hamas,if I'm reading the media and political
responses right,is winning that legitimacy for itself
by determined fighting. The US and its allies in this
can insist all they want but it seems they have been
checkmated by Hamas wisdom in participating in the
electoral process,an election they won,gaining a
mandate the West has tried to overturn without
success.Israel' s failure to wipe out these troublesome
pests who wont go away in spite of such terrible power
being directed against them also means that the US and
its ridiculous partisan policies represent wishful
thinking and little more.

The greater challenge for the Palestinians might not
be the Israeli barrage, which, in my view, has failed. It
is the question of how they are to move forward since
their elected government faces a challenge from the
rival Fatah who was encouraged by the West not to
accept the wishes of the Palestinians as expressed
through their own elections which brought Hamas to
power.

As it is,Israel is still locked in the colonialist
mentality. That mentality, however, .will be shaken if
Hamas does not capitulate decisively this week. The era
of Israeli absolute deterrence based on past victories
will be over.If you cannot flush out a guerilla army
in such a small strip of land, then perhaps you should
enter into discussions with them about mutual
accommodation.

QUOTE

Isolating Israel commercially is all well and good in
the unlikely, however noble event that the people
could bring it about. But what every Western
government has failed to say overtly, but whose
silence on the current matters has spoken (in
particular, the British and US veto on the first
United Nations resolution, and the US abstinence from
the vote on the second), is this:

That Israel's occupation, war crimes, collective
punishment policies, military and economic superiority
to all other Middle Eastern countries- is absolutely
in, will always be in, and has always been in, our
National Interests.

Until that long-held, 'vital' interest is altered
fundamentally, every citizens private protest will be
carried out in vain. Ever get the feeling you got born
having already lost the debate?
